Two bouts were decided on countbacks in the opening session of the Boy 3 semi-finals this morning.

Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for Conor Dempsey and Darren Barnwell after they both bowed out of the championships to Conor Jordan and Ryan O’Donoghue on countbacks in this morning’s 31kg and 39kg Boy 3 semi-finals following 4-4 and 12-12 ties at the National Stadium.

Thomas McCarthy (red) v Hugh Nevin

A solitary point was all that divided Jordan and Dempsey, while 36-32 was the accepted score margin from the O’Donoghue v Barnwell clash.

DAY 3

Joseph Nevin and Liam Glennon will meet in the opening Boy 2 final at the National Boy 1,2 & 3 Championships after both boxers recorded semi-final wins in the 29kg class this morning.

Nevin registered an inside the distance victory over Stephen Johnston, and St Joseph’s Derry ace Glennon, who is targeting his first title at the home of Irish boxing, came from behind to beat Cork’s Dylan O’Driscoll.

There was further disappointment for Leeside in the 31kgcategory after James McCarthy lost out to the impressive Craig Kavanagh, and one point was all that divided victor and vanquished in the corresponding semi-final, Sean Corr edging out Tyrone McCann 7-6.

Michael Keating earned a narrow decision over William Cawley at 33kg, Keating’s longer reach proving the deciding factor against an opponent who never stopped coming forward. There was a double reversal for O’Neill’s in the 36kg deciders with Tommy O’Neill losing to Clones BC dynamo Darren McDonagh, and Leinster champion Edward O’Neill, a cousin of Irish 2012 Olympian Darren O’Neill, losing to Nathan May, who recorded the Crumlin BC’s second win of the morning.

In the first semi-final in the 39kg division, Callan BC stand out Sean Purcell emerged victorious at the expense of Matthew McDonagh.

Eric Nash ensured that the Knockmore BC will have a representative in Saturday’s final with an inside the distance win over James McPharland and Aaron McKenna record and inside the extension win over Killian McDaid, also in the 42kg class.

Up-and-coming Clonmel BC prospects Lee Kelly impressed en route to his win over Michael Avestisian. Kelly was 4-1 up at the end of the first. Avestistian picked up the pace in the second, scoring with some neat shots.

However, Kelly was also finding the target to maintain his three point advantage going in the third and final round. Peter McCarthan claimed the final win of the morning session after registering a hard-fought 7-5 verdict over Aaron Gethins.

 DAY 2

The 33kg final will be disputed between Brendan O’Hagan, who earned an 11-3 verdict over Clonmel’s Fergal DeFaoite, and Barry Reynolds of the St Paul’s BC in Antrim. Reynolds, who had excellent second and third rounds, posted a 15-4 victory over John Nevin.

James Devlin withstood a spirited comeback from Dean Brophy to book his ticket into the 36kg final. Devlin was 10-5 up going into the final frame, but Brophy pulled out all the stops. However, it was Devlin that got the nod on a 13-12 decision.
Dominic Bradley (blue) and Jack Kavanagh

Limerick’s Eddie Donovan claimed victory from the other 36kg last-four duel. Donovan (Our Lady of Lourdes BC) led from the front en route to a 6-3 win over Tyler McMullan.
Either Matthew Tierney or Luke Carroll will leave the National Stadium with the Irish 39kg title. Tierney came from behind to beat the talented Stephen McGirr 12-9, the Oughterard BC ace, backed by his loyal band of supporters, whittling away Tierney’s advantage in the second before producing a fine third round to claim victory.

Carroll also found himself in arrears after the first round versus Lorcan Hurley but rallied to edged ahead going into the third before taking an 8-7 verdict from yet another see-saw encounter at the home of Irish boxing.

Sean Dempsey looked on course for a straightforward points decision in the opening bout of tonight’s Boy 1 semi-finals after taking a 5-2 into the third versus Pierce O’Leary. However, O’Leary, pulling out all the stops, won the final frame 4-2, falling just short of taking the contest to a countback.

Lee Harkin claimed victory from the other 42kg semi-final on a countback at the expense of Clare’s Martin Doherty. Oran McNaughton secured the next win of the session over Arklow’s Paddy McKenzie and Cork’s  Patrick Dunne (Riverstown BC) shaded Dylan Joyce (Avona BC)  11-10.
